Fantastic Pair of Figurative Oinohoai
Magna Graecian, Southern Italy, c. 4th century BC
Twin Oinohoai of ovoid form with typical pinched mouth and arched handle; Mid-dark tan clay with black gloss over whole and applied red, black and white decoration. One Oinochoe shows a draped female prancing left, holding a musical instrument and ceremonial branch, she is flanked on either side by a part palmette complex; All within a red linear border with the addition of a row of granules along the top. The other Oinochoe shows a naked male prancing right, head similarly facing left like female; He wears a garland around his neck and also carries a musical instrument and branch; A rosette in the field and part palmette on either side; Linear border with row of chevrons along top.
These are a super pair of juglets, highly unusual in terms of the quality and choice of depiction.
