Object Literature

To quote Wynne ‘This great figure is conceived as a river. He is old and strong, and as direction gives shape to a river, so he is pointing. A river grows from a tiny source, gains size and strength and then is lost in the sea. So the water, spurting from the raised right hand of the figure, flows out over the body and is lost in waterfalls from his pointing finger, his toes and his long forked beard.’ The work itself takes influence from Giambologna’s 16th century statue of Appennine Colossus in the gardens of the now lost Villa di Pratolino near Florence, imparting a feeling of great strength and brooding benevolence.
