The Baggage Elephant

An exhibition of 18th, 19th and early 20th century Campaign Furniture and Travel Items by Christopher Clarke Antiques.

In this bicentenary year of the Battle of Waterloo we are pleased to have found nearly 20 items either of the Napoleonic period or relating to the battle for this exhibition. As collectors will appreciate, this earlier period of campaign furniture is very interesting. It is an age before standardization of design has been achieved and so you are more likely to find ‘one off’ or unusual pieces of travel furniture such as the Cabin or Map Table included in the exhibition. We are also pleased to say that the catalogue has over 20 pieces with maker’s labels and 6 where the original owners are known. Also worthy of note is the carved Ship’s Chair which is one of the best we have seen; a Thompson Trunk Bed which is a particularly rare piece, an unusual Roorkhee Chair and 3 Albums of Camp Sketches which give us an amusing insight into the annual manoeuvres of a volunteer battalion.
