Object of the Week – Advance Copy Of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’

1937

One of only two advance copies of The Hobbit, collected by Tolkien himself from the printers and given, still unbound in sheets, to his friend the editor of The Oxford Magazine. These sheets were later bound in a specially-commissioned fine art binding by Donald Glaister and encrusted with precious gemstones to represent Smaug’s treasure hoard.
