Object Description

A super fine English 18th century George III period Chippendale mahogany wing back library armchair, of extremely well-shaped outline and desirable generous proportions;

Circa 1760.

Why we like it
Its oversize proportions and extremely well drawn shape surely make this superb wing chair the best that we have ever seen and one of the best on the market. Its boldly outswept back legs are indeed as good as they get, and the sculptural shape of its wings and arms is emphasised with crisp traditional frame-up upholstery. The luxurious woven flame-stitch or Hungarian stitch textile has the subtlest colors and a most amazing graphic quality that gives it a contemporary feel, at the same time being very traditional. It’s super comfortable, too.

The serpentine back flanked by shaped side wings, over scrolled armrests and cushioned seat, raised on mahogany square front legs and outswept back supports, united by an H-stretcher. Covered in luxurious Bargello pattern flame-stitch type woven fabric.

The frame is entirely original except for one (front) seat rail, which is an old replacement, all joints are recently re-glued, tight and ready for next 250 years of use.
