This exceptional gilt bronze mantel clock is finely-cast and elegantly veneered in malachite, and is especially notable for the excellently-sculpted hunting scene which adorns the upper part of the clock case.
The hunting scene shows a man with a hunting horn on horseback with two hounds as they pursue a stag. The sculpture is full of energy, drama and dynamism, and is shown on a naturalistic woodland base. Below, the circular white enamel clock dial is set inside a raised pediment of a rectangular malachite plinth.
The plinth is bordered with gilt bronze banding and set on a lower plinth with further gilt bronze ornamentation, including groups of animals (including birds and wild boars) and scrolling leafy foliage which also acts as scrolling feet supports for the clock.
The clock dial is signed ‘Azur a Paris’, probably for the clock’s 19th Century retailer.
