Object Description

A fine and rare Chinoiserie papier-mache tray depicting tea packers and carriers in a wooded outcrop, circa 1820.

Object Literature

Chinoiserie decoration on papier-mâche of this period is usually associated with the exotic style of the Brighton Pavillion, making English depictions of Chinese industry extremely rare especially on such a luxury item. Even more intriguing is the allusion to the tea trade on a tea tray, while clearly showing an English decorator’s ideas of Chinese faces and workers’ costume in contrast to the use of gold leaf and gold powder.

Of the quality associated with the top makers like Clay and Jennens & Betteridge.

Object Condition

Very good, consistent with age and use.
