Watercolour view in Looe Cornwall in original frame with frame makers label on reverse. Herbert Edward Butler (1861-1931) was born in London and trained at the Royal Academy School. He came to Polperro with fellow artist friend Charles Boutwood. They met and married sisters Thirza and Sophia Pond. Herbert and Sophia lived on Talland Hill Polperro where he started a painting school. He became well known and exhibited large oil paintings at the Royal Academy. After the First World War he concentrated more on painting watercolours and also became a book illustrator.
