Object Description

The rectangular brass engraved 12 inch square dial with 8 day movement in original oak case, attributed to GILLOW of LANCASTER. The hood with glazed door, moulded dentil cornice and blind fret carving and walnut columns above a trunk with shaped door flanked by fluted walnut columns above a pain base raised on ogee bracket feet.

Object Literature

James and William NEWBY, clockmakers, Kendal. Probably brothers worked between 1765 and 1800. Various clocks are recorded by them. Gillows records refer to ‘good 30 hours clock…………from Newby – £2.11.Od’.
