Object Description
The 1848 catalogue and known examples show the range of work carried out, including large statues, by the the Austin and Seeley Manufactory. This example, though not in the catalogue, bears all the characteristics of the maker in both form and facture.
Flora was a popular subject in the 19th century, in fact throughout art history from Roman wall paintings, through Botticelli and Poussin, the ‘Realm of Flora’ as described by Ovid telling of her garden, a gift for Zephyr, which he filled with flowers.
