Object Description
A bronze vide-poche sculptural hall table in acrobat-form
French, Early 20th Century
Height 86cm, width 39cm, depth 32cm
This remarkable piece, a very rare and unusual antique table, is a vide-poche (literally ’empty-pocket’) hall table, in the form of an acrobat performing a handstand. With a simple functional purpose – the shallow wide bowl is a simple depository for items upon entrance – it is elevated by its remarkable design, which utilises a quirky sculptural form of an acrobat balancing a bowl with his feet to make it stand out. Crafted in early twentieth century France, it is a unique piece, an excellent sculptural work and remarkable piece of early 20th century interior design.
