Object Description
A Rare Mid 18th Century Irish Mahogany Console Table of Small Proportions (29”)
With Moulded Edged Calacatta Rosati Marble.
The carved and shapely cabriole legs seem very well-grounded with a most definitely Irish faceted foot. The shaped frieze is centred with a finely carved shell. Interestingly, the ‘back’ of the table is shaped and finished and all four cabriole legs have carved shells to the knees, which may suggest that it could have also been intended to be used as a small occasional or centre table.
It should be noted that pier tables of this petite size (29” wide) from the middle of 18th century Ireland are extremely rare and rarer still with original age patinated surfaces.
A table of similar form and proportions resides at the National Museum of Ireland.
