Object History

A popular and prolific Dutch animal and landscape painter of qulaity, Ter Meulen was born in Bodegraven, southern Holland. He was taught by Anton Mauve and Julius van de Sande, amongst others, and there was correspondence between Ter Meulen and Vincent Van Gogh who admired his sheep paintings. He has always been regarded a follower of the Hague School, working there as well as at Elspeet and the Hoge Veluwe National Park with his friend Herman Van Der Weele.

Ter Meulen’s work can be found in the collections of the Rijkmuseum, Amsterdam, the Stedelijke Mueum, Amsterdam, and the Gemeente Museum in the Hague amongst other public collections. He was a member of the Putchri Studio, of which he was Chairman from 1910-14, and was also a member of Arti and Amicitiae. Ter Meulen received a 1st Class Medal at the Brussels World Exhibition in 1910.

This delightful and fluent watercolour has been in a private collection for some 30 years and remains in excellent condition.
