Object Description

A fine brass-mounted purple-heart games box by the Sormani workshop, of rectangular form with a hinged lid, raised on four brass bun feet, decorated with amboyna panels within kingwood, tulipwood and stained boxwood borders, the satinwood interior fitted with multiple compartments, mother-of-pearl counters and scorers in various woods, signed on the lock, ‘Vve P Sormani & Fils, 10 rue Charlot, Paris.’ French, circa 1880.

Footnote: Paul Sormani (1817-1877) set up his business as an ébéniste in 1847 and rose to prominence through the patronage of Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon III. On his death his widow and son, Paul Charles, continued to trade as ‘Sormani Veuve Paul et Fils’.
