Object Description

A fine regency rouge marble and ormolu mounted mantel timepiece. The drum shaped case surmounted by an eagle. The whole, standing on a pedestal base with a pair of volutes, supports and a mount depicting Hercules and the lion.

The gilt engine-turned dial with snake bezel and roman chapter has finely pierced heart pointers. Signed and numbered 753.

The single fusee movement is a half dead-beat escapement, signed to the back plate and numbered pendulum and rear door.

Benjamin Vulliamy, son of Justin Vulliamy, the founder of this eminent family of clockmakers, was born in 1747. He was admitted to the Freedom of the Clockmakers’ Company 1781-1820 and was Royal Clockmaker to George III.

Provenance: sold by Vulliamy to Messrs. Ferguson and Whitesides of Oxford Street in 1822.
