Object Description

A freestanding mahogany open bookcase attributed to Gillows, of upright rectangular form, the top with a hinged and ratcheted book stand with a gadrooned edge, enclosing three shelves with dummy end books on two sides, all set on a plinth base. English, circa 1830.

See Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Antique Collectors’ Club, Woodbridge, 2008, Vol.I, p.382, pls 456-7 for a similar versions made in bird’s eye maple for Ferguson& Co. in 1831.
