Object Literature

Joseph Newington Carter was born in Scarborough, the son of the marine painter Henry Barlow Carter (1803-1867). His brother Henry Vandyke Carter was the eminent physician and surgeon who created the illustrations for Gray’s Anatomy. He lived in Scarborough for most of his life but moved to London from 1848 to 1853, living in the Marylebone area. He also spent time in Devon painting the coastal views and seascapes.

By 1861 he had returned to Scarborough where he lived with his father. He died at Scarborough in 1871 and is buried at Dean Road and Manor Road Cemetery.

Examples of his works are held by the British Museum, Courtauld institute, the York Art Gallery. Carter’s paintings often feature ships in choppy waters off the English coast, as in this fine example.

The work is housed in a new British made gilt frame, which is in excellent condition.
