Object Description

The good half-length portrait of a gentleman, in his later years and wearing a thick brown overcoat, sensitively executed, the sitter having a prominent nose and lengthy silvered hair and looking out towards the viewer, painted in oils on canvas to a dark ground and feigned oval, the work presented unframed and unrestored, and surviving from the latter stages of eighteenth century England.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

There are two paper labels verso; one for Footman, Pretty & Co Ipswich, with pencil inscription for Vaughan and another label in quilled ink which is tantalisingly close to being able to be deciphered; there is a date and the words great grandfather.

A beautifully sleepy portrait that would certainly benefit from further research.

Object Condition

The picture remains in original though unrestored condition with no over-painting and some craquelure and paint fleck loss to the surface; please refer to the photographs for a visual reference. He remains well painted and very decorative.
