Object Description

A fine German ivory and parcel gilt tankard,

of cylindrical form with a hinged lid, ornate scroll handle and applied mounts, very finely carved throughout, the central field showing a bacchanalian feast with classical figures at a table being served by satyrs and putti, while angels and further putti hold garlands of roses overhead, the silver gilt cover with a repoussé border of flowerheads within strapwork, surmounted by an ivory finial of two putti singing and playing a lyre, the handle in the form of a nymph with a garland of roses and a putti-head terminal. The mounts stamped Neresheimer, late 19th century.
