A Group of Bois Durci Portrait Roundels
French, Second half 19th century
Between 11.5cm and 15in diameter, depth of 2cm
This set of Bois Durci portrait roundels consists of a variety of profile portraits, some in laurel frames, one in a turned-wood frame, of a variety of historical figures such as composers and rulers. Attributed to Francois Lepage, the creator of this material, these intricate and skilfully crafted object bear the likenesses of figures such as Beethoven, Mozart, Rossini, Haydn, Shakespeare, Moliere, Napoleon, and Queen Victoria. The largest roundel is 15cmin diameter, the others 11.5cm. Provenance: Christie’s, London, South Kensington, 26 October 2016, The Hone Collection.
