Object Description

A large French seaside oil painting by Robert Salles, Paris
French, c.1900
Frame: 116cm, width 215cm, depth 7cm
Canvas: 101cm, width 200cm, depth 3cm

Depicting a bustling, idyllic seaside town, this excellent, and very large, painting, also titled ‘Un après-midi au port,’ was executed in oil-on-canvas by the French artist Robert Salles (1871-1929). A Parisian artist working around the turn of the twentieth century, here he has created a charming image of life by the sea in a coastal village in northern France.

Various groups of children play around a café or bistro in the foreground; a horse drawn carries set off just to the left of the centre of the composition, and the view extends off along the coastline to the left with a steam-liner and aqueduct in the distance. Probably an imagined view, amalgamating various themes, objects, and characters related to dreams of the seaside, it is a delightful work, full of vitality, escapism, and a sense of wonder.

It is executed with wonderful painterly qualities and character, to create a whimsical, idyllic, quaint and picturesque image of life by the sea. It is signed to the lower right, ‘Robert Salles / Paris.’
