Object Description

A large mahogany lectern by Yabsley of Plymouth, the octagonal support set on a cruciform base with scroll feet and bold scrolling brackets, surmounted by an adjustable rectangular reading slope, the understand ink stamped indistinctly ‘J.G.Yabsley, Cabinet Manufactory, …Street, …Park Street, Plymouth’. English, circa 1860.

Footnote: John Yabsley established his business in 1829 and advertised his furnishing warehouse and cabinet manufactory in the Royal Cornwall Gazette in 1863. In the Western Morning News of 1829, he introduced his successor, a George Davis, to his valued clients as he is retiring from the business after 40 years. Please see the attached cuttings. He was also a volunteer fireman in Plymouth.
