Object Description

This large silver-gilt sideboard dish, inlaid with agate and hardstone, was made by R & S Garrard & Co in 1862 in London, 19 years after the firm was appointed by first official Crown Jeweller in 1843. This beautiful piece features in the centre the Powerscourt coat of arms, with a pair of winged horses, and the motto ‘fidelite est de dieu’ (faithfulness is from God). Large octagonal gems occupy the main four sides of the dish, while in the corners a smaller elliptical piece is surrounded by four other gems, two elliptical, two rectangular. The arrangement of these stones in various colours and patterns creates a wonderful visual harmony that elevates the piece and complements the radiant glow of the gilt silver.
