Object Description

The provincial French buffet having an oversailing rounded top over two doors being carved with floral sprays and with pierced iron strapwork adornments opening to reveal an internal shelf, over a shaped apron with further carving to dwarf cabriole legs the whole surviving from the last quarter of nineteenth century France.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

Removed from the fashions of the court, French Provincial style developed in the provinces of the country, such as Provence, Normandy, the Loire Valley and Bordeaux. Dating to the 17th and 18th centuries, French Provincial furniture was not as ostentatious as the designs being produced for the royal palaces, but elegant S-shape cabriole legs and ornate carvings elevated the sturdy chairs, sofas, tables and bedroom furniture intended for everyday use. The buffet was one of the most favoured types of furniture for French homes.

Redolent of provincial France and a useful piece at an attractive price.

Object Condition

The piece is in relatively good overall structural condition and there are no issues with stability. There is a small amount of old worm that isn’t active. The shelf is split but it doesn’t mean it cannot be used. There are small nibbled losses to the feet.
