A Magnificent Pair Of George III Style Oval Giltwood Mirrors In The Manner of Robert Adam, After A Design by C & R Light.
English, Circa 1885.
Each mirror has an urn finial amidst scrolling acanthus above an oval plate with a beaded and husk carved frame set within striking blue glass borders.
This neo-classical form with its scrolling acanthus, rosettes and paterae in the manner of Robert Adam, is closely related to a design published by the firm of C & R Light in their Cabinet Furniture: Designs and Catalogue of Cabinet and Upholstery Furniture of 1881.
A pair of mirrors of this design by C & R Light is illustrated in Child: World Mirrors, p. 165, pl. 299. A design for a related mirror by C & R Light with the addition of a four light candle arm is illustrated in Joy: Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, p. 386. A further pair of mirrors of related design is illustrated in Adrian Alan, Vol V, p. 50.
