Object Description

A majestic German ivory tankard,

of cylindrical form with a hinged lid and applied ornate scroll handle, very finely carved throughout, the central field showing a bacchanal with Dionysus in a chariot pulled by panthers surrounded by satyrs, nymphs, putti and centaurs in various stages of drunkenness, blowing trumpets, playing tambourines and cavorting with animals, beneath fruiting vines, the cover with four bands of cartouches and scrolls surmounted by a finial of Venus and Cupid, the handle in the form of a female term with a satyr’s head at the hinge. German, late 19th century.
