Object Description

This superb Meissen porcelain group piece depicts the mythological moment when Venus, an attendant, and Cupid haul in a fishing net containing a young boy-god Triton from the sea. Contained in the net are some fish that have also been caught up in the net, and the young sea deity’s mouth is shown in the manner of these companions. The composition is centred around a rock base, to which are applied reeds, shells, a frog and a lobster. The colours vary between exact pieces: the palette chosen here is largely one of gentle and light ocean tones in blue, green, yellow, and some purples. The scene’s whimsical and fairy-tale nature is emphasised throughout.

With crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue, incised model number C35, and impressed numeral and painter’s number.
