Object Description

A very striking and remarkable Platinum (French mark) large oval Sapphire & Diamond Cluster Ring. This beautiful ring is centrally four raised claw set with an extraordinary Deep Blue Oval natural Sapphire which has been estimated (by an independent Gemmologist) as weighing 6.00 Carats, with an indication of moderate thermal enhancement. This beautiful Sapphire is surrounded by twelve (12) Pave set & slightly scalloped edged ‘Old Cut” Diamonds totalling 3.00 Carats and of G – H Colour & VS – SI Clarity.

Circa 1935

This extraordinary ring is accompanied by a Gemmological report from WGI Labs UK Ltd, no: WGI9624121125 confirming the above assessment.

Object History

It should be noted that indications of slight thermal enhancement are frequently found in Sapphire Jewellery made post 1915, whereas moderate to major treatments then developed as the 20th Century progressed. No treatment readings in Sapphires and particularly Rubies (of which we have several excellent examples) are scarce and as such rare.

As illustrated in the Science Museum, it has been possible to slightly heat treat Sapphires and Rubies since the Roman times and it is therefore feasible to find early Jewellery with stones, which when tested, produce an indication of slight or moderate thermal enhancement.
