Object Description
A set of 24 George III silver dinner plates by Naphtali Hart, 1801, each of circular form with a gadrooned edge, the rim engraved with the heraldic arms of Denison, fully marked and incised with inventory numbers, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 24, 26, 27, 29, 30, 31, 32, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 46, 47 and 48. Marks for London, 1810.
Footnotes: The arms appear to be those of William Joseph Denison, Esq. of Denbies Co Surrey, (b1770), High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1808 and Member of Parliament for Surrey from 1818.
Naphtali Hart was a Jewish silversmith working with Duncan Urquhart. They recorded their first manufacturer’s mark as ‘bucklemakers’ at the London Goldsmiths office in 1791 and registered further three marks as partners in 1795, 1802 and 1805.
