Object Description

This wonderful set of George III period, antique sterling silver dinner plates, have ribbon-tied reeded rims, and are numbered and marked with scratch-weights to the underside.

12 of the plates were hallmarked in London in 1806 by Henry Nutting, and 12 were hallmarked in London in 1808 by Henry Nutting & Robert Hennell.

They are engraved with the crest of Baronet Sheffield of Normanby.

Each plate measures 9.75″(25cm) in diameter, and the set together weigh 479.2 troy ounces.

Object History

Provenance – from the estate of Sir John Sheffield 2nd Baronet of Normanby.

The crest likely altered by Sir Berkeley Digby George Sheffield, 6th Baronet circa 1890, as it is the later version (added arrows) of the Sheffield crest.
