Object Description
A Sèvres porcelain centrepiece bowl, with floral and painted landscape decoration
French, Late 19th Century
Height 24cm, diameter 33.5cm
By the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, this beautiful centrepiece is crafted from exquisitely painted porcelain, with delightful Rococo style floral patterns to the outside, both to the base, and around the rim of the central piece. The whimsical, scrolling acanthus frieze houses a wide low interior space, which is decorated in the centre with a large circular painted landspace.
With a mountainous backdrop, and swans in stream leading out into distance, the woodland setting is beautifully painted, surrounded by a geometric frieze, and further floral elements on the inside rim. The rim and base are lined with gilding against a black ground, contrasting with and helping to lift the superb painted elements. A delightful centrepiece and a fine works of Sevres porcelain, it is an unmissable addition to any interior.
It is stamped to the base ‘S. 61’ in a small black cartouche, demonstrating that it was made in 1861 by Sèvres.
