Object Description

A ‘valetudinarian’ is a person constantly concerned with the state of their health… hence the corpulent gentleman spending his life seated on a pair of scales, whilst being spoon fed with a suitable potion by his wife.
This grey wash drawing was commissioned as an illustration to appear in The Spectator magazine around 1790.
Inscribed on reverse with title.
