The artist was born in 1913 and studied at the Gravesend School of Art before attending the Royal College of Art from 1931 – 1935. He then spent time studying in Rome, Paris and Copenhagen. In 1973 he was invited to take the post of president of the Royal Watercolour Society, a position he held for eight years during which time he did much to help the society recover from a time of financial difficulties. Ernest Greenwood exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute, Royal British Academy and many provincial galleries.
