Object Description
Ancient Greek Hellenistic earrings. A matching pair of earrings, each composed of a hoop composed of tightly twisted wires, featuring a polished circular plaque in a stylised shield design to the front, and suspending a cluster of hollow spherical beads with granule decoration to bottom, fitted to top with a secure hook fitting, approximately 6.7cm in length from top of hook. Tested yellow gold, approximately 7.96 grams in weight, circa 2nd century BC-1st century AD.
The Hellenistic period produced some of the most intricately detailed designs of the Greek world.
These earrings have been fitted with modern yellow gold shepherd’s hook fittings so that they can be worn today without affecting their historical integrity.
Complete matching earrings such as these are a rare survival from the ancient world. These earrings are a testament to the high level of skill of the craftsmen of the time and are in fine condition commensurate with their age.
