Object Description
A fine Ancient Roman carnelian intaglio featuring the god Cupid and a pair of cockerels. The god, shown in profile, is depicted winged and standing, turned to the left, with his arms around the neck of the cockerel before him. The cockerel faces another cockerel, partially hidden behind a herm in the left field. The tail feathers of the second bird extends out behind the column of the herm. A palm branch curves out above the scene, which is set on a horizontal line representing the ground. The reverse is plain and unworked. The carnelian presents a beautiful orange-red colouring and translucency.
The piece is supplied with a museum-quality impression.
