Object Description

A fine pair of Ancient Roman gold earrings featuring a drop-pendant of vibrant carnelian. The body of the earrings are composed of a gold rhombic frame featuring an inlay of blue-green glass paste and a hatched lip encircling just beneath the rim. A thin gold wire curves from the base of the rhombi towards the top in which it is held in place through a small loop. Looped at the base of the wire is a grooved gold stem, which connects to an oval pendant enriched with a carnelian inset placed in a granulated gold frame. The earrings feature some minor chips to the edges of the frames. The glass paste inlays are now reasonably worn, with a small piece missing from one.

Date: Circa 1st-3rd Century AD

Object Condition

Very good. Some minor chips to the edges of the piece and wear to the glass paste inlays and a few or the granules are now missing. Minor damage to the reverse of the carnelian pendants.
