Object Description

An Ancient Roman, North African redware container featuring a globular body standing on a short circular foot. The vessel tapers drastically at the neck, forming a pronounced shoulder from which two handles are drawn upwards and applied to the tall funnel-shaped mouth. The smooth outer walls present two faint ridges at mid-body, showing how the clay was worked during the wheel-production process.

Date: Circa 4th century AD

Object History

From a Surrey gentleman’s collection (D.G.), purchased on the London Art market from ADA member, 1990s – onwards.

Object Condition

Fine condition, a minor chip to the foot. Some earthy encrustations remain on the surface.
