Object Description

An excellent quality screw stem fruitwood plough plane, stamped five times L. Taylor. The whole, of a most intricate design, has brass and steel plates. The blade is stamped J. Howarth cast steel Sheffield. This plane is of a lovely sculptured form, and as an item of treen, most pleasing to the eye. The whole has a lovely colour and patination.

The name of Howarth is recognised as being a firm who produced tools of extreme excellence. They exhibited at the London exhibitions of 1851 and 1862 and in Paris in 1855, and on each occasion were awarded first class prize medals. The Universal Society for the Encouragement of Arts and Industry founded in 1851, reported on the goods exhibited at Paris and the Society awarded its first class prize medal to Howarth for excellence of his tools, and elected him an Honorary Vice President of the Society, an honour paid to no other British manufacturer.
