This is a truly magnificent decorative arrangement of twenty-one framed plaster intaglios of various antique subjects, circa 1840 in date.
These splendid intaglios are beautifully mounted on the original purple velvet ground and set in the splendid original rectangular birds-eye maple frame.
They are of various sizes, some of oval shape, others of circular form. All together making a truly attractive group depicting figures and profiles from differing periods of history – Medieval, Grand Tour and 19th Century, including Sir Isambart Marc Brunel, Napoleon I, Henri I and Louis XII of France as well as other classical scenes.

Intaglios – were originally used as seals, these carvings or cuttings are moulded out of white plaster, marble dust or wax. The original 19th-century intaglios were also made from wood or stone. The depressed designs depicting ancient scenes from Greece, Italy, etc were also used as markers of the land. They were also collected as souvenirs from European Grand Tours in 1830.
