Object Description

A very rare oversize antique Bidjar kilim from the late 19th century in sublime original condition.  The variation in the red dyes, known as abrash gives this rare kilim so much character and charm.  Many varying wool dyes would have been produced over 130 years ago to weave this unusually long kilim from Bidjar in Persia.  The design is almost aboriginal in style in the border, we have not come across a kilim of this quality of drawing and interest in many years from this region.

If you would like to view this piece at our showroom please get in touch to arrange a viewing.  Or alternatively request a home visit if you would like to view this rare antique Kilim at home.  We love to travel and have helped customers and interior designers since 1990.  We have offered our free, no obligation service for over 30 years of business.

Object History

Kilims or Kelims are woven differently from piled carpets as they are constructed with a flat pile.  This is done by using wool interwoven through the warp foundation rather than pushed up to create a knotted pile which is then cut down.  Kilims are famous from Anatolia, but have been hand-woven in Afghanistan, Persia, India and the Caucasus for centuries.  Dyes are varying from one weaving area to the next but mainly consist of vegetable dyes for late 19th century examples and earlier.

Object Condition

Very good indeed, no tears or damage on this antique rare flat-weave.
