Object Description

An oak Stationery Box by Briggs of 27 Piccadilly, London with label to the back of the inside of the lid. The box has an angled top to give it a wedge shape and a drawer to the front that can only be opened on the removal of a long pin from the main compartment. The box interior has 10 different sized compartments of various heights to take papers and envelopes etc. The drawer has a divided section to one side with lift of lid that covers an area fitted to take inkwells. The shield shaped brass plate to the top is engraved with the initials A.M.W. Thomas Briggs are believed to have started in business in 1819 and by 1823 are listed as Pocket Book makers at 27 Air St. Piccadilly. By 1828 they are under Dressing Case Makers at 27 Piccadilly in the trade directories. Briggs continues to be listed at this address until 1880, when it has another occupant. Other addresses associated with Briggs are 20 Newington Causeway and 40 Caledonian Road which may have been manufactories or secondary shops. Mid 19th Century.
