Object Description

Known as the ‘Continental model’, this clock is shaped like a Napoleonic soldier with a distinctive tricorn hat. The soldier model features blinking eyes, designed to captivate and surprise its owner.

The model was created in the second half of the 19th Century by the acclaimed Connecticut-based manufacturers, Bradley & Hubbard (founded 1852). The company produced an eclectic range of cast iron objects, from clocks to sewing machines. This item is signed on its base, ‘Bradley & Hubbard/ Patented July 14 1857’.

Dressed as a Napoleonic soldier, the figure wears a black tricorn hat, frock coat, and red breeches, with long black socks and buckled shoes. He stands in a confident pose, with his belly forward and legs squarely planted on a shaped base. The soldier holds a circular clock dial before him, which features black Roman Numerals.
