The seat is hinged and opens to reveal a spacious interior, with a central spindled divider – ideal for storing sheet music or magazine. The original hinges to the lid are strong and in good condition. The stool retains its original working brass lock, with key and is decorated with its original mother of pearl key escutcheon. The exterior is decorated with stunning intricately carved open fretwork panels to the front, back and sides, which are finished with fine beading. Associated structed cotton material sits behind the open carved fretwork panels and each corner is decorated with elegant barley twist columns. The box stool stands on its original turned feet, incorporating its original solid brass cup castors. Originally designed as a Canterbury box stool, it would be ideal for use as a piano stool, dressing stool or additional seat in the living room.
