Object Description

This is a magnificent antique French Art Deco green patinated bronze sculpture of a semi-nude warrior, by the famous French sculptor, Pierre Le Faguays (French, 1892-1962), circa 1930 in date.

This stunning sculpture features the remarkable figure of a classical semi-nude warrior with a javelin in his right hand and an oval shield on his left arm with both javelin and shield being detachable. He is depicted with impressive facial expressions and body gestures in the act of determinedly and assertively throwing the javelin while parrying with his shield.

The sculptor has succeeded in conveying every little detail of the scene – the tight muscles of the warrior given by the tension of the act, the frowning forehead above a focused gaze and the legs stretching deep-rooted on the ground make us feel engaged with the scene and fully captivated.

The sloping rocky style bronze base in which the warrior stands is signed ‘P. Le Faguays’.

This high-quality hot cast solid bronze was produced using the traditional “lost wax” process, otherwise known as the “cire perdue” method.

This is a splendid bronze sculpture and it will no doubt become the centrepiece of your Art Deco collection.

The attention to detail here is remarkable and this bronze is sure to receive the maximum amount of attention wherever it is placed.

Art Deco or Deco,
is an influential visual arts design style which first appeared in France during the 1920s, flourished internationally during the 30s and 40s.

It is an eclectic style that combines traditional craft motifs with Machine Ageimagery and materials. The style is often characterized by rich colours, bold geometric shapes, and lavish ornamentation.

Deco emerged from the Interwar period when rapid industrialization was transforming culture. One of its major attributes is an embrace of technology. This distinguishes Deco from the organic motifs favored by its predecessor Art Nouveau.

Historian Bevis Hillier defined Art Deco as “an assertively modern style…[that] ran to symmetry rather than asymmetry, and to the rectilinear rather than the curvilinear; it responded to the demands of the machine and of new material…[and] the requirements of mass production”.

During its heyday Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress.

Pierre Le Faguays (French, 1892 ~ 1962) Faguays was born in Nantes, France and became famous for the originality he gave his dancers, many of which were inspired by the statues of Tanagra. He gained a medal of honour for his work in 1927. He was a best friend of Max Le Verrier and the Le Verrier foundry produced many of his pieces. He used 2 pseudonyms as well as his own name and they were Fayral and Guerbe. Which were the family names of his Mother and his Wife. He was a leading sculptor and his work is frequently praised for its high quality and attention to anatomical accuracy. He also produced designs for Goldscheider in Paris under the “La Stele” label. He worked in several mediums and studied with his friend Max Le Verrier. He was a good friend of both Marcel Bouraine and Max Le Verrier and indeed the Le Verrier foundry produced many of the Le Faguays statues. All three had studied together at the Beaux Arts in Geneva and remained life-long friends.

Lost Wax Method
sometimes called by the French name of cire perdue or the Latin, cera perduta is the process by which a bronze or brass is cast from an artists sculpture.

In industrial uses, the modern process is called investment casting. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, but the steps which are usually used in casting small bronze sculptures in a modern bronze foundry are generally quite standardised.

Contrapposto is an Italian term that means counterpoise. It is used in the visual arts to describe a human figure standing with most of its weight on one foot so that its shoulders and arms twist off-axis from the hips and legs in the axial plane.
