Object Description
Unusual and important commode chest of drawers with brushing slide, marble top and brackets on which to hang linens. This piece would have been used as a washstand in a bedroom, but not just any bedroom, it would have been made for the bedroom of someone very rich or important (or both!).
The quality of this commode is second to none, with quarter cut kingwood inlaid with marquetry around the drawers and ormulu handles and mounts.
From a furniture history point of view this piece provides the linguistic stepping stone between the English and French use of the word commode, as it is both a toilet (as in wash stand) and a chest of drawers.
