This is a superb antique Georgian sterling silver 2 handle loving cup hallmarked for London 1757 with the silversmiths mark for James Wilkes.
It measures 6″ (15 cms) tall x 8″ (20 cms) across including the handles x 4 3/4″ (12 cms) deep and weighs 430 grams.
One side is engraved with a racehorse with jockey annotated ‘Drowsy Jenney’, the reverse is inscribed
‘Charles Badger Esq Rid Jenney
When this Silver Cup it was Won
At a place Calld South Bentley in Essex,
When the Ods it was ten to one
There was your Prime Running Horses
But all that thay coold whold not Do
For none Could Beat Squr Badger
So Neatly he Rid in his Blue’.
