Object Description
This wonderful table is designed after the famous Della Valle brothers (Italian, fl. mid-19th Century). The brothers were exceptionally skilled craftsmen who specialised in the production of scagliola (imitation marble) furniture. They were based in Livorno on the Ligurian coast in Italy.
The table features a circular scagliola top which is decorated with a coastal village scene. This depicts a mother and her daughter, and a young woman at a well. This image is contained within an oval medallion which is encircled by a black band, decorated with golden-yellow stylised scrolled foliage. The table top is edged with giltwood which is carved with strapwork.
The circular top is supported on a central turned giltwood column and three giltwood legs carved in the shape of semi-nude satyrs. These supports are set on a giltwood triform base, which is decorated with foliage and strapwork carvings and set on three feet in the form of Grotesque masks.
