Object Description

A handsome jade nephrite paper knife with a decorative 15 carat gold (unmarked) mount. Excellent quality.

Length 26 cms. Width 2.15 cms.
Circa 1890.
Probably French or Russian.

Object Literature

Nephrite is a variety of the calcium and magnesium-rich amphibole mineral actinolite (aggregates of which also make up one form of asbestos). The chemical formula for nephrite is Ca2(Mg, Fe)5Si8O22(OH)2. It is one of two different mineral species called jade.

Object Condition

This gold mounted nephrite paperknife is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. The gold mount is unmarked but tests as 15 carat.

Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
