Object Description
This beautiful embroidered band—which is designed to form part of a skirt or dress—was created in India in the early 19th Century. It is an exquisite piece of craftsmanship, which will be appreciated by anyone who loves fashion and textiles.
The band has been crafted from yellow satin and intricately decorated with cerise (pinky-red) silk motifs. Working by hand, the maker has employed delicate chain stitches to depict a variety of animals, including tigers, peacocks, and elephants with howdahs. People are also represented, being carried in sedan chairs, in bullock carts, and as stand-alone figures. In addition to these decorations, there is also a wealth of stylised foliage, floral motifs and geometric patterns. These become more dense in the lower section of the band, creating an area of red which beautifully contrasts with the yellow above.
