Object Description

A rare pair of early Dublin cast candlesticks having octagonal bases with sunken wells and diamond faceting. The baluster stem follows the outline of the base. This is very desirable shape. Sterling silver. Lovely plain style and good gauge silver. Weight 627 grams, 20 troy ounces. Height 16.5 cms. Base 10.6 cms. Each is stamped within the well of the base with Irish silver hallmarks for Dublin 1723. Maker Joseph Walker (see Jacksons page 629). Also stamped on the edge of the capitals with the harp mark.

Object Literature

Cast candlesticks first appeared in England circa 1685 and are cast in two separate sections, the base and the stem in two halves. They are heavier in weight and are capable of withstanding greater wear.

Candlesticks of this type were made in Ireland from the Queen Anne period up to about 1735. The combination of diamond faceting with a well is almost invariably an Irish feature.

Object Condition

These lovely candle holders are in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Excellent colour. With a full set of Dublin Irish silver hallmarks stamped on the top of the base in the well. The Dublin harp and date letter are clear, there is no Hibernia mark as this did not start until 1734. The makers marks are only part visible but between the two it is possible to identify the maker positively as Joseph Walker. Also stamped with the harp mark on both candle sconces. The diamond faceting has good definition with some acceptable wear.

Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
